Locally made handcrafted items, Chester County Pennsylvania

Craft work fits naturally into life at Kimberton Hills. We bring the same spirit of care that infuses our work with one another and with the land to the creation of beautiful, functional items. Working at a loom or carding wool generates both a sense of focus and of accomplishment.

Hand made woven goods in PAGood work is being done well. And objects made with good will and attention enrich the lives of their recipients. So the practice of quality craft work enhances the environment of well-being in the village for the users as well as the artisans. In addition, when we sell our crafts to the public we not only support ourselves, we extend that interconnection to our customers. We share the relationship that a well-crafted product creates between its maker and its user. We remind others of what we have learned: that products made by hand with good intention enrich the quality of all our lives.

Handspun yarn and weavery workshop in Pennsylvania
We knit or weave handspun yarn into a variety of articles for home or personal fashion.

Recycling and reusing natural fiber fabrics is a major activity of the weavery workshop.  Strong, all-cotton washable rugs are woven from strips of old denim jeans.  Wool, silk and cotton “rags” are also used in an expanding variety of products.

Some items we produce are:

Woven rugs made with recycled fabric

Fleece rugs

Placemats and napkins

Chair mats

Woven wool or cotton scarves, hats and hooded capes

Organic Yarn and weavery products in Pennsylvania
Working with the wool from local sheep, we prepare and hand spin yarn for use in the weavery.  We dye much of our handspun yarn with natural plant dyes – growing and gathering dye plants is also part of our work.

These dyes also give the wonderful colors for our plant-dyed silk scarves.  We use only non-toxic mordants.  Because we are working with natural components our products vary seasonally.

We also transform raw wool into felting projects.  Subjecting it to moisture, heat, friction, and pressure causes the hairs to tighten together in a solid mat. The result is a lightweight, windproof, and water-resistant fabric.

Some of our products include:

Yarn for knitting

Skeins of wool

Felted purses, hats and hot water bottle covers

Knitted hats and small toy animals

Pottery workshop in Chester County, Pennsylvania
The Kimberton Hills pottery crew makes clay come alive.

Vases, platters and napkin rings are just a few of the items made in the pottery.  This workshop is run on a part-time basis, with hopes to become more active in the future.

Woodshop in Chester County, Pennsylvania
In the wood workshop we make wooden utensils and other items using wood from fallen trees from our own land or, when not available, from non-endangered species of trees.

Many items are completely handmade.  Others are cut using machines and then assembled and finished by hand.   This workshop currently is run on a part-time basis.
