Service volunteers play a vital role in the success and sustainability of Kimberton Hills. If you are looking for a gap year experience, or if it’s time to change direction, a year or more at Kimberton Hills can offer new inspirations and your service and energy play a vital role in the life of the village. Service volunteers fully participate in community life, and depending on their length of stay, may focus on one area of the community or participate in a wider range of activities. Some join as full-time land helpers to gain experience in biodynamic, organic, and sustainable methods of regenerative farming and land stewardship. You will receive room, board, a small monthly stipend, access to village cars, food from our biodynamic farm, and a one-of-a-kind opportunity for personal growth, skill development, and community engagement.

Definition: Service volunteers commit to one year of volunteer service, usually with an option to extend their service at the end of the year.

Responsibilities: Primarily support the villagers (adults with developmental disabilities). Service volunteers help in their house and workshops each day and may participate in planning festival celebrations and/or cultural offerings and are welcome to join in the many other aspects of community life. You are expected to be capable of assuming a supervisory role if/when requested.

An intern is a volunteer coming to the community for one to three months to learn about our intentional community, developmental disabilities, crafts, and/or biodynamic agriculture. Interns may focus on one area of the community (e.g., the CSA garden) or partake in a broader spectrum of village life.

Long Term Coworkers join Kimberton Hills because they are looking for a life that matches their ideals. They wish to make a strong commitment to living in a Camphill community, want to share life with people who have developmental disabilities, and have a strong interest in living and engaging with others to build a community in which all members are valued contributors. LTCWs may come as a family to raise their children in an environment rich in personal connections and shared culture. People come to us with varied backgrounds, talents, and skills in the arts, human services, agriculture, business, and crafts. Each person within our village strives to find a meaningful vocation in the context of community living.

Some LTCWs at Kimberton Hills are new to the Camphill movement, while others have lived and trained in one or more Camphill centers. Some LTCWs begin as short-term volunteers before deciding to make a longer commitment—a decision that comes about individually through the development of a deeper personal and spiritual connection with the mission and ideals of Camphill. This commitment lasts years, perhaps a lifetime.

Responsibilities: Long-term volunteers are expected to fully participate in community life and to lead households and/or workshops. They can take on many roles in village life. In addition to managing a household and creating a healthy home environment, they may have some administrative or organizational responsibility, serve on various committees, and/or lead a crew in an agricultural or crafts area or within a home. They also have an active role in the spiritual and cultural life of the village.

Land Helpers are Service Volunteers in our Garden and Dairy who receive hands-on training by working alongside experienced farmers. We believe the health of the land and people are deeply interdependent. In that spirit, we practice biodynamic agriculture, which begins with the best organic practices and incorporates a view of the land as a living organism. We offer the opportunity for aspiring agrarians to gain experience in biodynamic, organic, and sustainable methods of agriculture and land stewardship—some Land Helpers may attend the Biodynamic Winter Intensive offered through the Nature Institute and the Pfeiffer Center in NY.

Definition: A Land Helper is a Service Volunteer who commits to one or two years of service with a primary focus on biodynamic agriculture.

Responsibilities: Primarily help in either the CSA or the Dairy with limited time each week helping in their life sharing household. You may be asked to help with morning or evening responsibilities in your house.

Camphill Village Kimberton Hills offers the opportunity for admission into the Camphill Academy. This is a practice-integrated post-secondary program in Inclusive Social Development, teaching the art of building inclusive communities that support individuals to lead and maintain meaningful and fulfilling vocations as well as enriched, social and cultural lives. The transformative learning experience, including a deepened understanding of Camphill, anthroposophy, and inclusive community building, consists of college-level courses and practica that leave the student debt free.
